Proper body mechanics can help reduce the pain of feeding the newborn. Hey, guys! Ben from Carter PT here again.

Last time we talked about the hip pain and low back pain associated with being a new mom. Well, the next thing I want to talk about are neck and shoulder pain.

If you have a newborn, 6 month or 1 year old, you’re used to carrying your child and that can create problems for both your neck and your shoulders. Sometimes, the kids are squirmy and even when you get them in the right position you can’t control them, for instance trying to feed them.  One of most common things we see is just challenging positions of the shoulders  usually trying to shrug.

So let’s pretend that I am holding a baby here. What I observe from a lot of young moms is their shoulders are too high when they’re holding the child. This can really cause some discomfort in the shoulder blade and neck . Often when I’m feeding my child late at night,  I find myself holding a bottle and tipping my head down. Notice if I would turn my head more to the side I’ll put less stress on my neck and shoulders. At that time, it may not seem like much but it can really make a big difference when you’re feeding at 1:00AM, 4:00AM or  6:00AM.

We’re not very aware of our body mechanics, as it’s an accomplishment just to be awake to feed a fussy crying child. So next time you’re feeding your child, whether it’s through a bottle or breast feeding, be really aware of mechanics and make sure you have enough  support. Use as many pillows as you need to relax your shoulders. Eventually, you’ll find that you won’t have as much stress along your shoulder blades and your neck area.
